The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Muskogee, Oklahoma,one of its 2011 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Muskogee, nominated by Downtown Muskogee, was selected for its unique role in American history, its diverse cultural heritage and its citizens’ dedication to protecting that heritage. 

Our Location

Muskogee is located in northeastern Oklahoma roughly midway between Kansas City and Dallas.  Built on the historic Texas Road, now Highway 69, Muskogee is a convenient break in your journey from St. Louis to San Antonio or Fort Worth to Branson.  We can also be reached by river along the McClellan-Kerr Waterway.  Our western heritage and southern hospitality will make you glad you made Muskogee a distinctive destination on you next visit to America's heartland.

Our History

On New Year’s Day, 1872,  a surveyor for the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad drove the stakes for a depot to be called Muscogee Station.  Located  three miles south of the Three Forks where the Arkansas, Grand and Verdigris Rivers join together,  this railroad terminus gave birth to the City of Muskogee. 

More than 100 years later, Muskogee is still a thriving port community with a downtown steeped in history, rich in culture and alive with pride.  We invite you to explore all that Muskogee has to offer.  We're sure you'll want to come back often, or even come to stay.  That's why we say, "Meet me in Muskogee!"

Main Street Program

 Downtown Muskogee, Inc.(DMI) is the non-profit organization which manages the Muskogee Main Street Program.  Main Street is a program developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation which works toward historic preservation and economic revitalization of America’s downtowns.

Muskogee joined the Main Street Program, administered by the Oklahoma Main Street Center, in 2008. 

Main Street uses a Four-Point Approach  in preserving and revitalizing core business districts.  The four points are:
